Every year, thousands of people take part in the Kiltwalk to raise money for charities across Scotland. A huge thank you to everyone that chose the STV Children’s Appeal for last year’s Kiltwalk. We appreciate every step you took towards ensuring a better life for children and families that needed it most in your local area.
We are pleased to provide an update on how the fundraising helped children and families across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
Thanks to all the hard work and effort by our Kiltwalkers in 2024, the STV Children’s Appeal was able to allocate a grant of £2,000 to twenty-three different charities.
Making a difference in Aberdeen
Bairnecessities who receive and distribute pre-loved items to those in need who have been referred by health visitors, midwives, social social workers and partner charities, including domestic violence shelters, homeless charities, and refugee organisations.
Fersands and Fountain provide a range of vital services to a regeneration area of Aberdeen, empowering residents through informal learning, support, education, volunteering and other services to reduce poverty and increase life chances.
AberNeccesities provides disadvantaged families with the essential and basic necessities that no child should go without. From maternity bundles for mother and baby to nappies, formula milk, clothing, toys and equipment for children aged 0-18 years.
Befriend a Child, a local charity which supports school-aged children growing up in difficult life circumstances through befriending, mentoring and group activity programmes, they help children achieve their full potential and develop into confident and competent young adults.
Making a difference in Dundee
Dundee Dragons is a wheelchair sports club dedicated to changing lives through the power of sport. The charity promotes and provides facilities for amateur wheelchair sport in Dundee, offers coaching and competitive opportunities in wheelchair sport.
Feeling Strong work to ensure every young person aged 8-26 in Dundee who has experienced a mental health or wellbeing challenge is supported to reach their full potential by delivering projects, services and campaigns in the community to tackle stigma, build confidence, develop resources, create networks and support the positive recovery journey of young people.
Tayside Children with Cancer & Leukaemia specialise in supporting families in their local area who have a child under the age of 18 who has been diagnosed with either cancer or leukaemia. They work with the local health services to provide additional supportive care during treatment and up to 3 years after treatment is completed for those who need it.
Togs, a service for families struggling to provide essential clothing and equipment for their children. They operate similarly to a food bank, receiving donations from the public and distributing them to children suffering from the effects of poverty.
Making a difference in Edinburgh
East Lothian Young Carers who provide support to Young Carers aged 0 to 24 living in East Lothian with information, support and breaks from caring to young carers and their families.
Kids Loves Clothes, a fully volunteer-led charity whose mission is to give a wardrobe’s worth of quality, donated clothes to every child in the Lothians who really needs it. In 2023, they gave 1,805 children clothes and 370 children bags of toys.
Pilton Youth & Children’s Project, a charity committed to enabling each young person to realise their potential and take a positive role in society. They host a variety of clubs and groups, including 1-1 school support, a community garden, parents groups, and fun clubs, and youth work trainee placements.
Sandy’s Community Centre who provide essential services, particularly to the most vulnerable and at-risk members of the community such as babies, senior citizens, and people from ethnic backgrounds. Their services include a kids club, boxing club, cooking classes, mums and babies club, parents and toddlers group, Polish classes and arts and crafts.
Making a difference in Glasgow
Haus of Seisay, a charity that strives to provide career opportunities in hairdressing for care experienced young people.
Saint PHNX, Scottish musical duo who provide “Happy Place workshops” for a safe space for children to express their emotions through art and music and promotes mental health awareness to empower young individuals to find their own happy place.
Glasgow North East Carers Centre who look after people with illnesses or disabilities. This includes Young Carers aged 8-18. Care tasks may include personal care, medication, and housework.
The Well Multi-Cultural Resource Centre supporting ethnic minority communities in South East Glasgow with issues related to poverty, social isolation, limited English language skills, cultural differences, and assimilating to life in the UK.
Achieve More Scotland delivers programmes to improve young people’s physical and mental health and well-being, confidence and aspirations by engaging them in structured, positive activities that work across communities and are delivered by role models.
PEEK – Possibilities for Each and Every Kid supports children, young people and families through play, creative learning, improved wellbeing and volunteering.
Launch Foods provides children in the community with free, hot, nutritious food after their school day and during holidays – they have provided in excess of 750,000 free meals since starting.
Crookston Community Group collects excess food from places such as Tesco and Waitrose with the goal of tackling food waste and improving the living conditions for others, and operates a food bank.
Royston Youth Action provide facilities for recreation, education or leisure time for young people, children and families residing or working in the local community.
Jeely Piece Club provides play and learning opportunities for children from 0 to 12 years.
Amma Birth Companions provides vital services to ensure women and birthing people from migrant backgrounds and other groups are supported during pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood.
A big thank you from the STV Children’s Appeal and these wonderful charities, who will use their grant to support even more children and families affected by poverty.
The walk might have been hard at times, but all your efforts were worth it in the end. Thanks to fundraisers just like you, the Appeal can continue to make a difference in the lives of children and young people affected by poverty.
