Ibrox-native Alistair “Ally” MacDonald, is lacing up once again for his 10th Kiltwalk, bringing his total steps to a staggering 511,800 since he first took on the challenge in 2015. The Mighty Stride veteran’s journey began with a rookie mistake—tackling the trek in his work boots. The resulting blisters were a painful lesson, but they only strengthened his resolve (and investment in better footwear!). Now, a decade and countless miles later, Ally is a well-seasoned Kiltwalk champion, ready to hit the streets between Glasgow Green and Balloch once more in support of his chosen charity.
This year marks Ally’s fourth Kiltwalk in support of the STV Children’s Appeal, a cause close to his heart. Explaining his choice, he said: “I’m supporting the STV Children’s Appeal again because I want to do my bit to help children and families in Glasgow who are struggling. Every child living in these circumstances deserves a better life. I also love that the funds raised support multiple charities, not just one, and the Appeal keeps me updated on exactly how my efforts are making a difference.”
On his mental and physical preparation for the Kiltwalk, Ally said: “My job as a Trolley Porter at Tesco Silverburn keeps me moving – I can do anything between 10 to 20 miles of walking during one 9-hour shift! I also ensure I keep my steps up on my days off.” Ally’s top tips for a good Kiltwalk include lots of prep ahead of the day, a solid pair of broken-in trainers, lots of snacks and water, and to dress for the weather.
One of Ally’s favourite Kiltwalk memories is watching a dog in a miniature kilt get sidetracked by squirrels—dragging its unsuspecting owner straight into a bush! It’s moments like these that keep him coming back year after year. “It doesn’t take much for me to feel inspired and energised to take on another Kiltwalk,” Ally said. “It’s such a special day with a great atmosphere and I feel like the Kiltwalk has a culture of its own, from the banter and camaraderie to the music, views, pit stops and cheers along the way.
There’s something really special about being in community with a bunch of people supporting a charity close to their heart. I’ve had so many conversations over the years and it’s always great to see folk who have travelled from places like England and Ireland to take part. Nothing quite compares to the roar of applause you hear as you come into Balloch knowing you’re so close to the finish line. Even though it’ll be my 10th Kiltwalk, I still find the event challenges me, and I love that it motivates me to stay fit and look after my health.”
STV Children’s Appeal Fundraising & Events Manager Emma Jackson said: “Super Ally as we like to call him has been a brilliant supporter of the STV Children’s Appeal over the last couple of years and we appreciate each of the many steps he has taken to support our charity and others since his Kiltwalk journey began. Best of luck to him and all the other Glasgow Kiltwalkers this year.”
This year, Ally is tackling the 23-mile Mighty Stride solo, as his usual walking buddy—his dad—hung up his boots after turning 70. Though he won’t have his father by his side, Ally is more determined than ever to complete the journey for both of them, carrying on their Kiltwalk tradition with every step and raising as many funds as he can for the Appeal.
